ABOUT

By Samuel D. Hunter • Directed by Davis McCallum

Two Men. One Journey.

A world premiere that transforms the Wyly Theatre's intimate Studio Theatre into a Costco—the heart of the New American West. Steps away from the Lewis and Clark trail, the lives of a fledgling writer and a descendant of William Clark intersect as they stock televisions and cheese puffs. In a story leavened with humor and compassion, these two young men move toward an uncertain and unpredictable future, realizing that sometimes the most important journey you can take is the one between two people.

Written by 2014 MacArthur Foundation Fellow Samuel D. Hunter, one of the most provocative new voices in American theater, Clarkston continues DTC’s commitment to bringing the nation’s most exciting writers to Dallas.

Contains cigarette smoke, strong language, sexual themes and mature content. Shows, dates, times, prices, venues, and cast members subject to change.

Developed as part of a 2013 Residency with Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater.
Clarkston is the recipient of a Theater Development Grant from the Laurents/Hatcher Foundation.

"The beauty of Clarkston is that it isn’t fantastical or whimsical. It is real in ways that can be hard to capture on the stage."

CLARKSTON: The Tension Between the Divine and the Daily

The old advice to "write what you know" doesn't narrow it down much for someone as sharp as award-winning playwright and MacArthur "Genius Grant" Fellow Samuel D. Hunter. In this exclusive conversation with DTC's Director of New Play Development Lee Trull, Hunter explains how an off-handed comment by his husband sparked a world premiere play about discovery, legacy, history, and Costco cheese puffs.
