Jonathan Lethem at The Dallas Museum of Art (posted 01-15-2014)

In a partnership between The Dallas Museum of Art and Dallas Theater Center, Jonathan Lethem will be at The Dallas Museum of Art for Arts & Letters Live.

Thursday, February 13th 7:30pm
"The Fortress of Solitude: From Novel to Musical"

The Los Angeles Times said, “Jonathan Lethem is as ambitious as Mailer, as funny as Philip Roth and as stinging as Bob Dylan.” He is the author of over a dozen books—including Dissident Gardens, Motherless Brooklyn (National Book Critics Circle Award), and The Fortress of Solitude—and the winner of a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant and the 2013 Berlin Prize.

The Fortress of Solitude is a story of how racial differences affect two boys growing up in 1970s America. It is the story of impossibly joyful afternoons of games in the street and of living in a society in which you don’t belong. It is the story of prison and of college; of Brooklyn and Berkeley; of soul and rap; of murder and redemption. And, it is the story of what would happen if two teenage boys obsessed with comic book heroes actually . . . maybe . . . had superpowers.

At this event, Lethem will discuss his creative process and insights into The Fortress of Solitude, and then Kevin Moriarty (Artistic Director, Dallas Theater Center) will moderate a conversation with Lethem and the creative team responsible for transforming the novel into a musical: Itamar Moses (playwright), Michael Friedman (score), and Daniel Aukin (director). The discussion will be followed by a sneak peek from the musical, which will have its world premiere at DTC and then play at the Public Theater in New York.
