Dallas Theater Center celebrates National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage month by recognizing the many contributions of Hispanic and Latinx artists in our community and across America.

We were fortunate to feature American Mariachi as our last play before we went dark due to the pandemic. American Mariachi is a heartwarming story about a woman who dreams of forming an all-female mariachi band. It’s brought to life by its celebration of family and cultural tradition. Under the direction of Henry Godinez, we were able to capture a performance digitally and share it with Dallas Theater Center ticket holders before closing our doors due to COVID.

Earlier in the season, we featured the Lin-Manual Miranda musical In the Heights. The musical featured hip-hop, salsa, R&B, and, merengue music with vibrant dance and lyric of life and dreams in Washington Heights, a New York neighborhood.

During our 2018-2019 season, we performed Real Women Have Curves. This beautiful coming-of-age story of a first-generation Mexican-American woman who works alongside her mother and friends in a sewing factory with aspirations of college. She discovers her truth and how richness of family, friendship, and culture helps to shape her future.

Audience reaction to American Mariachi, In the Heights, and Real Women Have Curves reminds us of the richness of art and culture present in Hispanic/Latinx heritage and touches all across America. At Dallas Theater Center, we are committed to being a welcoming space for everyone to participate and engage in theater. We celebrate Hispanic/Latnix artists, patrons, and communities. We look forward to producing more plays in our future from authentic voices such as the ones found in American Mariachi, In the Heights, and Real Women Have Curves.
