|Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP has been a DTC sponsor since 1995, and Robert B. Krakow, a partner in the Dallas office, sits on DTC’s Board of Trustees. We recently asked Bob to tell us about his and the firm’s involvement with the Theater and its role in the Dallas community.|
DTC: Bob, you personally have been involved with Dallas Theater Center for a long time. How has your relationship with DTC evolved?
Bob: Initially, my wife Leslie and I were merely occasional patrons, but after I was invited to join the DTC Board of Trustees, we became season subscribers and Benefactors. In recent years, I have served as the Board’s Legal Liaison, helping the DTC address various legal issues.
DTC: Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is unique among our corporate partners, in that the firm links its support to a major client entertainment event. What motivates the firm to build an event around a show?
Bob: The success of our firm is wholly dependent on our ability to provide the highest quality legal services on an ongoing and consistent basis. Consequently, it is an imperative that when we invite our clients to an event, it be something of the highest quality that will both entertain our guests and reflect positively on us. We partner with DTC because we know we can count on the Theater to deliver first-rate, highly entertaining productions, together with outstanding pre-show gatherings. Among the many shows we have sponsored that stand out in my memory are Cabaret, a fabulous production where our guests sat right on stage in the cabaret itself, the opening night of Giant, and the very first production at the Wyly, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at which we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Gibson Dunn’s Dallas office. These events never fail to generate enthusiastic appreciation from our clients.
DTC: The firm was the first company to sign on as a sponsor of the new Christmas Carol at the Wyly Theatre. What is it about this story that resonates for your firm?
Bob: Sponsoring this year’s production of A Christmas Carol is a bit of a homecoming for us. Prior to the opening of the Wyly Theatre, our DTC client event every year from the mid-1990s through 2008 was a production of A Christmas Carol, originally in the old Arts District Theater, and later at the Kalita Humphreys Theater. Year after year we packed the house with clients and other friends, and their families. When the Wyly opened, we elected to sponsor, and invite guests to, productions staged there, and our invitation lists were more adult-focused. With A Christmas Carol moving to the Wyly this year, and in an all new version directed by Kevin Moriarty, it seemed like the perfect time to return to the Dickens classic and host a family event. Beyond its pure entertainment value, Christmas Carol’s calls for compassion, goodwill and social justice are themes that resonate for all of us, making it a particularly great choice for this year’s client event.
DTC: Giving back to the community is clearly a value of your firm. What are some of the other causes that Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher supports?
Bob: We believe in giving back generously to our local community and strive to enrich the lives of others through pro bono work, community service, volunteering and charitable giving. Among the organizations we support are the Anti-Defamation League, CASA, Dallas Adoption Program, Dallas Historical Society, Dallas Zoological Society, Friends of the Katy Trail, Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, Dallas Holocaust Museum, Klyde Warren Park, Lambda Legal, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, SPCA of Texas, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and the Vogel Alcove.
DTC: What else would you like our subscribers to know about the firm?
